About PRISM

PRISM Advanced Clinical Education is a continuing education company for clinicians in Pelvic Health and Vestibular Rehab, founded by Dr. Jazma Dobbins, PT, DPT, PRPC, CAPP-Pelvic, a Board Certified Pelvic and Women’s Health Clinical Specialist. She teaches every course and leads every lab herself, in person.

Why PRISM exists

Helping more clinicians help more people

“My goal has always been, how can I help the most people?” Dr. Dobbins says. Early on, that meant seeing more patients in rural communities, which she’s passionate about. In Alabama, the whole state is rural. Then it meant mentoring more clinicians. “Now it’s, how can I help more clinicians help more people?”

Why the name PRISM

She’s passionate about the inner ear and its tiny calcium carbonate crystals. A prism takes a single band of light and brings out a whole array of colors. That’s what she wants her courses to do: take a narrow way of thinking and show you all the real possibilities for your patients.

Why in person

“Almost all classes teach you good information,” she says. “It’s what do you do with it once you know it?” PRISM fills that gap: where you put your hands, why you put them there, and how to see a patient on Monday and build a full plan of care. In a vestibular lab, that’s learning to use a counter-lever to move a patient quickly through a Semont maneuver without hurting their neck. In a pessary lab, it’s getting your first measurement right.

PTAs belong here too

There’s a misconception that PTAs are less skilled. “Sure, maybe initially, but it doesn’t have to stay that way,” she says. PTAs take the same continuing education PTs take, and they can build the same clinical reasoning, each working within their own scope of practice.

Dr. Dobbins earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and completed her Pelvic Health training through the Section on Women’s Health, now the APTA Academy of Pelvic Health.

She found her way to Pelvic Health through her own symptoms. In her early 20s, working as a paramedic in Etowah County, Alabama, she developed urge incontinence, and on an ambulance you can’t always get to a restroom. She started wearing incontinence briefs just to avoid accidents. Medication helped some, but it came with side effects.

Then she read an article about women’s health physical therapy (nobody called it Pelvic Health yet) and found there were only three in all of Alabama, none within three or four hours of her. “There’s got to be a better way,” she thought, and “that’s something that I could do.” She went back to school, earned her physical therapy degree, and opened a Pelvic Health clinic.

Vestibular came later, from an energetic PT school instructor who pulled her in. She went on to complete a vestibular competency course through Emory University and Duke University, and she has taught vestibular courses since about 2017. Her courses have run in Montgomery, Oxford, and Hoover, Alabama.

Today she owns Gadsden Pelvic Rehab and Physical Therapy, with clinics in Rainbow City and Oxford, Alabama, where she treats pelvic floor dysfunction, bladder and bowel disorders, pelvic pain, and pregnancy and postpartum conditions.
